About Tabea

I’m a native German speaker who is passionate about helping others discover that learning a language can be an enjoyable and empowering experience.

Interestingly, my own journey with languages did not start very positively. Early in school I had English and French teachers who were quite intimidating and often became frustrated quickly when students struggled. That experience made me believe for a long time that I simply wasn’t good at learning languages.

After finishing high school, I spent time traveling and living in Australia and New Zealand, and for the first time I experienced what learning a language could actually feel like when it happens naturally through conversations and everyday life. I realized how much fun it can be and how many opportunities it opens — from meeting new people to building meaningful connections across cultures.

Because of those early experiences, I care deeply about creating the opposite atmosphere for my students: a relaxed, supportive space where mistakes are part of learning and where speaking a new language feels exciting rather than stressful.

Over the past few years I have lived in Canada and have recently moved to New Zealand. Being in a multilingual relationship with my New Zealand partner has also taught me many valuable lessons about communication across languages and cultures. Small things like tone of voice, expressions that exist in one language but not another, or how the brain adapts when constantly switching languages can all play an important role in understanding each other. I’m always happy to share practical insights and tricks that make navigating these differences easier.

Outside of teaching, I love spending time outdoors and exploring nature with my camera and drone. Photography is a big passion of mine, and I enjoy hiking, snowboarding and playing racquet sports such as tennis, table tennis and squash. I’m currently also learning how to surf. Above all, I love experiencing the beauty of nature and have a big appreciation for animals.

Teaching Approach

My approach to teaching German focuses on creating a relaxed, positive environment where students feel comfortable speaking and learning without pressure. From my own experience of learning English for more than 20 years, I understand how important it is to feel encouraged rather than intimidated when learning a new language. Many traditional language classes can feel stressful, which can make it harder to build confidence. My goal is to create the opposite experience — lessons that feel natural, engaging and enjoyable.

While my formal tutoring background is in mathematics and tennis coaching, both roles have taught me how to explain concepts clearly, adapt to different learning styles and support students in building confidence step by step.

I have also been actively teaching German to my New Zealand partner, which has given me valuable insight into the challenges English speakers face when learning German. This experience has helped me develop practical ways to explain grammar, pronunciation and everyday expressions in a way that feels intuitive and easy to understand.

Rather than focusing only on memorisation, I encourage students to speak as much as possible and learn the language through conversation, real-life examples and practical use. The goal is for learning German to feel less like studying and more like naturally picking up the language over time.

Lessons are available online or in person in Christchurch.

Lesson Length

I offer lessons from 30 minutes to 1 hour.

In my experience, shorter lessons more frequently can be more effective for language learning than very long sessions with large gaps in between. Regular exposure helps the brain stay connected to the language and builds confidence much faster.

Who My Lessons Are For

My lessons are suitable for:
• Beginners starting German from scratch
• Intermediate learners who want to improve speaking confidence
• Adults or teenagers
• People who want to learn German for travel, work, or personal interest
• Anyone who prefers a relaxed and supportive learning environment

Example Lesson Structure

A typical lesson may look like this:

1. Warm-up conversation (5–10 minutes)
We start with simple conversation to get comfortable speaking German right away. This could include greetings, talking about your day, or reviewing vocabulary from the previous lesson.

2. New topic introduction (10–15 minutes)
We introduce a new theme such as:
• useful travel phrases
• everyday conversations
• grammar basics
• pronunciation practice

The focus is always on practical language you can actually use.

3. Practice and speaking exercises (10–20 minutes)
We practise the new material through:
• short dialogues
• role-playing real-life situations
• question-and-answer exercises
• pronunciation guidance

This part focuses on building confidence while speaking.

4. Review and takeaways (5 minutes)
We quickly review what we learned and I may give you simple practice ideas you can use between lessons.
