About Laila
Bonjour!
I'm Laila, a native French speaker and passionate language instructor with a genuine love for helping others discover the beauty of French.
My path to teaching combines both academic depth and real classroom experience. I hold two Master's degrees: one in Education from INSPE in Besançon, France, where I trained specifically in teaching methodology, and one in French and Francophone Studies from the University of Kansas, where I deepened my understanding of the language, literature, and cultures across the French-speaking world.
Along the way, I've taught in French secondary schools, worked as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the university level, and tutored students of all ages (from elementary schoolers to adult learners).
What I care about most is making French feel accessible and genuinely enjoyable, not intimidating. I know firsthand how challenging (and how rewarding) learning a language can be, and I bring patience, structure, and encouragement to every lesson.
My teaching blends solid grammatical foundations with real conversation, so you're not just memorizing rules: you're learning to actually think and express yourself in French!

As a native French speaker with formal teacher training (MA in Education from INSPE, France) and an academic specialization in French and Francophone culture (MA, University of Kansas), I combine structured pedagogy with an emphasis on real, natural communication. I don't believe in grammar for grammar's sake, every concept I teach is immediately anchored in conversation.
I begin with an informal assessment to understand the learner's current level, their goals, and their learning style, then build a personalized plan around that. I adjust based on what's working and where the learner needs more repetition or a different explanation.
A typical session blends:
- A short warm-up in French to ease into the language and review previous material
- A focused mini-lesson on a specific grammar point, vocabulary set, or pronunciation challenge
- Applied practice through conversation, roleplay, or guided exercises using that material
- Real-world context: authentic materials like short articles, dialogues, or media appropriate to the student's level
- A quick wrap-up noting progress and previewing what's next
Lessons are adapted in real time: if a student needs more time on a concept, we stay there rather than rushing to "cover" material.
I bring an authentic combination: I'm a native speaker with genuine cultural fluency, and I have formal training in how to teach — not just what to teach. My background spans French internships (Les Augustins secondary school, SOPA elementary program in Calgary), a Graduate Teaching Assistant role at the University of Kansas, and tutoring experience across academic settings (Lake Forest College, AFEV volunteer program). This means I understand both the linguistics of French and the pedagogy of how people actually acquire a second language. I know how to break down what feels intuitive to me as a native speaker into something clear and learnable!
