About Lyubomir

Hi! I’m Lyubomir Gospodinov, a National Master, 2300-rated chess player, U.S. National Chess Champion, and two-time Florida State Chess Champion.

I’ve spent years competing at a high level, and now I enjoy using that experience to help other players develop their game. I work with students of all ages and skill levels, from children learning chess for the first time to experienced tournament players pursuing ambitious competitive goals.

I’m also the founder and head coach of Gospodinov Chess Academy in St. Petersburg, Florida, where I provide private coaching, group lessons, and after-school chess programs.

As a coach, I aim to make improvement both structured and enjoyable. I want my students to understand chess more deeply, become more confident in their decision-making, and develop skills they can continue using independently.

Whether your goal is to learn the game, improve your tournament results, reach a new rating milestone, or simply become a stronger player, I’d be happy to help you get there!

About the lesson

My lessons are personalized to each student’s skill level, goals, and playing style. Whether you’re completely new to chess, looking to improve your fundamentals, or a competitive player working toward the next level, we’ll build a structured training plan around the areas that will help you improve most.

Lessons can include analysis of your games, calculation and tactics, positional understanding, opening preparation, middlegame strategy, endgame technique, and tournament preparation.

I place a strong emphasis on developing your thinking process rather than simply memorizing moves. We’ll identify recurring mistakes, understand why they happen, and build practical decision-making habits that you can apply independently in your games.

For newer players, we’ll build a strong foundation in fundamentals, tactics, checkmating patterns, opening principles, and practical play.

For competitive players, we’ll take a deeper approach to game analysis, calculation, positional play, opening preparation, endgames, and tournament strategy, with structured training designed to help you break through rating plateaus.

Every student learns differently, so I adjust the pace and structure of my lessons accordingly. My goal is for every lesson to leave you with a clearer understanding of your chess and specific areas to work on before our next session.

I teach all ages and skill levels, both online and in person in St. Petersburg.
