About Jay

I am a mostly self-taught trumpeter and musician, which gives me a unique insight into many of the obstacles for self-motivated playing and practice which is at the heart of becoming a good musician on any instrument. I currently play in a wide variety of musical contexts, including jazz bands (a trad dixieland band, and a jazz trio), the first division Old Silkstone Brass Band, a pop/soul band Malah Palinka, and as a session trumpeter for weddings. This is alongside a large amount of previous experience, playing in a Big Band, horn sections for samba settings such as in a bloco in Rio Carnival. I am also a multi-instrumentalist, playing and teaching jazz and rock guitar, and playing percussion, predominantly samba percussion through which I have played at the 2016 Olympic Home-Coming parade, Manchester Pride, and the festival Africa Oye.

I have taught guitar and trumpet part time at intervals during the last 5 years, however now am looking to take on new students, and am really looking to develop my teaching ability by actively studying musical pedagogy, and reflecting on the effectiveness of each and every lesson.

About the lesson

I have a lot of experience working with children and teenagers in schools and youth clubs, and I have a passion for helping adults connect/reconnect with music, therefore I specialise in beginners and intermediate students. However any experienced trumpeters who want to branch out into different genres or develop themselves into a more rounded player would also fit very well into my experience.

My teaching style is flexible based on the student, and I would give one free lesson to work with the student to draw up a lesson plan based on what they desire to work on. This could include improvisation, jazz/music theory, technique, or perparing for particular performances etc. amongst many other things. I have come to appreciate the importance of meeting students on their ground through my experience as a youth-worker and workshop leader in terms of maintaining engagement. This is part of an approach designed for students to enjoy the experience of learning and playing and therefore become self-motivated players who will continue their musical journey beyond one particular teacher.
