About Amanda

Hi, I’m Amanda Wei—a professional cellist and dedicated educator with 30+ years of teaching experience. I hold a Master of Arts in Music (cello performance) from Western Illinois University (GPA 3.88). I serve as Assistant Principal/Principal cellist with regional orchestras (Bergen and Edison Philharmonics) and direct the BCTC Orchestra. My students regularly earn top prizes, including at the New Jersey Teachers Association Competition, and succeed in auditions. I’m punctual, organized, and encouraging, and I teach in English and Chinese. Expect clear goals, respectful communication, and steady, measurable progress.

About the lesson

I teach cello with a clear, encouraging approach that blends solid technique with musical expression. With 30+ years’ experience and a master’s in cello performance, I’ve guided students of all ages to competition wins, successful auditions, and lifelong enjoyment of music.
• Teaching method & techniques:
I focus on healthy setup (posture, bow hold), beautiful tone, rhythm, and intonation. Lessons draw from scales/etudes (Dotzauer/Popper as appropriate), shifting, vibrato, and bow strokes (legato, detaché, spiccato). I integrate ear training, sight-reading, and practical music theory.
• Typical lesson plan:
1. Warm-ups (scales/intonation/tone)
2. Technique spotlight (shifting, bowing, vibrato)
3. Repertoire coaching (from beginner pieces to more advanced pieces)
4. Musicianship/theory minute
5. Clear weekly goals + practice strategies (timed reps, slow-practice, rhythm drills)
