About Thomas

Hello, I'm Thomas a York-based composer with a passion for composing and teaching composition.

I have been writing music since the age of 13 back in Essex where I was from. This means I've been composing for over 10 years now. As a young composer, I always wanted support in composing on the dos and don'ts of composing. I never really felt supported as a young composer/songwriter.

So I made it a goal of mine to teach up and coming composers of all kinds and give them the support they need to grow as a composer.

Since then I've graduated with a Degree and Masters in composition and I'm now looking to go into my PhD.

I have had many of my pieces performed in the York Late Music Concerts and Have had my piece's recorded by the Delta Sax Quartet, The York Guildhall Orchestra and singer, Anna Snow. (and many more.)

I'm now looking to share my knowledge and creativity with new composers around York.

I strive to teach composition in an engaging way that makes a student want to keep creating music.

In my lessons, I can help a potential student get familiar with composing tools such as Garageband, Logic X Pro, Sibelius and Musescore.

I'm the most comfortable teaching Piano. However, I can work with guitarists/singer-songwriters. I am not a vocal or guitar teacher however but I can help with guitar chords and lyrics. Just don't go in expecting a vocal or guitar lesson.

If you don't have a Piano I can always bring mine, however, this will depend on what the students want's so this can be negotiated.

My method is teaching composition will often involve looking at what others composers/songwriters have used in their work. By breaking down what does work and what doesn't work. For example, a task I will usually do with a student is breaking down their favourite song and their least favourite song, then together we analyse why they enjoy it and what they dislike about it.

This helps me get an idea of what the Students musical interests are and what music they enjoy and dislike in pieces of music.

My lessons will always be tailored to the students wants/needs, I will never force a student to compose in a way "I like". I will always rely on the creativity of the student as I believe everybody has a musical voice.

The lessons after this analysis stage will get into the process of making music. Going over basics such as chords, melodies and structures. I often found growing up that bouncing ideas of another creative person allows a musical mind to grow. Most of the lesson will be an exchange of ideas and I see this as growth for both me as the teacher and them as the student.

For more experienced composers I can go over things such as orchestration or have lessons about meaning in music, things like creative control and more philosophical questions, I can also do lessons on specific composers or songwriters if a student wishes to. If they want to know specific things about a composer/songwriters musical process.

In my lessons, if the student has written a piece or just has some ideas, I can give honest and constructive feedback about how it could be improved or maybe just slight changes. I will always be kind in feedback and I will never try to dissuade a student from making music.

My lessons are for people of any age, I know from experience that my lessons tend to favour those with objectives like GCSE's / A-Level's and Undergraduate Music Courses. However, all ages can be accommodated, especially those out of school who just want to learn to do something new.

A teaching session for a younger person below 11 might be going over basics and less about analysis of music. However, the parents of the child might have something in mind about what you'd like me to go over.

I can work with any age as long as they have a passion for writing music or just need some encouragement. With young children below 11, I'll need guidance from the parent as to what they think their child needs in terms of tuition, because these are not Piano, Guitar or Singing lessons and a lot of the skills in writing music comes from knowing the basics of how to do these. I'll need the advice of the parent and maybe a discussion with their instrumental teacher about where they are in their musical growth. However, All levels of creativity and skill are welcomed!

As experience I've been working with Undergraduate Composers ever since I joined York St John, I've been using my knowledge of composition in many ensembles I've been in over my time. This means that I've helped many musicians with creative journeys with advice and lessons about how to improve their compositions and songs.

My qualifications:

Masters in Music: Composition: York St John - Distinction

BA Honours in Music: Composition: York St John - 1st
