About Ricardo
To whom it may concern
I believe in being of an interdisciplinary nature, not just because this nurtures innovation, but also because this is essential in these modern times. As a result, my interest stretches from computers sciences and entrepreneurship to biological sciences. My undergraduate studies included extensive background literature on microbiology, biochemistry, biotechnology and genetics.
Later, in my postgraduate years, I delved into high throughput screening technologies which included metagenomic library creation and functional screening to RNA-seq, transcriptome assembly, annotation, differential gene expression analysis and gene finding. I completed my Master’s degree in bioinformatic orientated biotechnology under the supervision of the distinguished professor, Jens Kossmann, at the Institute for Plant Biotechnology, Stellenbosch.
However, to supplement my science background, I started working for the University of Cape Town (UCT) and the National Research Foundation, at UCT’s Research and Postgraduate Funding Office (PGFO). This decision was made in order to develop my interpersonal, administrative and organizational skills. The position at UCT’s PGFO entailed daily communication with postgraduate students and academics, with regard to the administration of scholarships and research grants for national and international entities, from sources such as the government, parastatals and private organizations.
