• Research Project: Mechanisms of Tetracycline resistance in aquatic systems.

Aim:
The aim of the project is to identify specific tet genes responsible for tetracycline resistance within microorganisms within aquatic systems.
Objectives:
• To isolate tetracycline resistant isolates from water samples within the North West Province.
• To determine the distribution and dynamics of tetracycline resistant genes in order to identify the source and degree of pollution within aquatic systems of the North West Province.
• To identify the plasmids associated with tetracycline resistance through next generation sequencing to determine the mechanisms involved in resistance development within the North West river systems.
• To characterise transformants in order to determine their contribution in antibiotic resistance development.

• Research Project: Community structure of gut microbes in Busseola fusca (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

Aim:
The aim of this study was to further our knowledge on the microbial community structure within the midgut of B. fusca larvae.
Objectives:
• To determine the microbial community in the midgut of B. fusca larvae by using culture dependent methods.
• To compare the microbial diversity of larvae collected at different sampling sites to determine whether differences occur between geographically separated sites.

We organized academic and social events for the students and lecturers. With my help and dedication our committee won the prize for the best overall student academic committee out of 25 committees on campus in 2010.

7. PERSONAL INTERESTS

Personal interests:
From a very young age I had a passion for the environment and animals. Since I started studying B.Sc I developed a specific interest in biodiversity and the interactions between various organisms, specifically microbes. I enjoyed all aspects of my course equally – fieldwork, laboratory work and analysing the data.

I’m organized, hard working, proactive and good at problem solving. My excellent communication skills and ability to think outside of the box make me a perfect candidate for any position.

In my spare time I enjoy stimulating activities such as puzzles, knitting and reading autobiographies and fiction. I love being outdoors and when the opportunity for extreme sports present itself I am usually the first on-board.
