About Megan
My own personal mindfulness practice over many years has increasingly shaped how I approach teaching violin, believing strongly that genuine presence matters as much as technical correctness. I noticed early in my fourteen years of teaching that students who felt calm and truly present made faster technical progress than those rushing anxiously through exercises without real awareness. That observation led me to formally study mindfulness techniques specifically to integrate them thoughtfully into how I structure every single lesson. My own daily meditation practice keeps me personally grounded and directly informs the calm attentive energy I try to bring into every teaching session. Students often tell me my lessons feel noticeably different from previous violin training they have experienced specifically because of this genuine calm centered atmosphere. After fourteen years, I remain deeply convinced that true musical progress depends as much on mental presence and awareness as it does on any purely technical exercise alone.

My teaching integrates mindfulness practice directly into violin training because focused presence is just as central to playing well as it is to meditation itself. Every lesson opens with a brief grounding exercise focusing purely on breath and body awareness before any actual playing begins which noticeably calms nervous or distracted students. I encourage students to notice physical tension in their shoulders and bow arm without judgment treating awareness itself as the first step toward genuine technical improvement rather than forcing immediate correction. Warm ups are approached slowly and deliberately with full attention on sensation rather than rushing through them as a routine formality before the real lesson starts. I incorporate short silent pauses between exercises allowing students to genuinely process what just happened technically and mentally rather than moving immediately to the next task. Performance anxiety receives serious dedicated attention through breathing techniques and present moment focus exercises borrowed directly from mindfulness practice. This calm centered approach particularly benefits students who arrive stressed or distracted since we address mental presence alongside technical development rather than treating them as separate concerns.
