  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

My mother took me to my first piano lesson at the age of 2 years and 11 months. She played the piano quite well and loved the instrument, so her influence must have been massive, but besides that, I should say I had a genuine passion for music in general since a very young age, music has been always a big part of my life.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

Lute sonatas by Leopold Sylvius Weiss and the Keyboard works of J.S.Bach, like Goldberg Variations.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

The piano has got a very special destiny; once you play a note and keep the note, you can not make the sound louder, the sound will only decay, on the other hand with voice, or string/ wind instruments you play/sing a note. then you can make a crescendo, add vibrato etc whilst holding a note. Understanding this "destiny" of the piano is vitally important in piano playing, especially for a beautiful legato cantabile playing. it is fundamental knowledge for any pianist but often unnoticed. "Listening to the Decay!" is a mantra in my class.

When we are busy playing an instrument, I mean physically trying to play a piece of music, musicians often leave their ears somewhere else, they don't listen closely enough to what they are playing. Also, for the pianists, our contact points with the instrument are the fingertips, that's all, we need to be tactile, and feel the connection to the instrument.
Your touches and senses are so important, For some students find these ideas very difficult but once they realise what I mean the piano playing becomes a riveting experience.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

Sorry, It's impossible to answer. To master the highest artistic level in any instrument /voice is very complicated; so much painstaking effort and dedication are involved. And of course, one has to be even physically suited for the instrument, for example, if you have a pair of very small hands you might struggle to play a certain repertoire on the piano. Complexity goes on and on in any instrument.
  • What are your keys to success?

Passion, determination and discipline and a bit of luck.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

French pianist Samson Francois and American Jazz pianist Bill Evans. They are my all-time heroes. I am sure they will be there at the bar as they died prematurely due to their drink and drug problems. I would probably bore them by suggesting a healthier lifestyle; still we would hopefully have a last drink, I would call a Uber and send them home!

My third choice is Dame Janet Baker, I don't think she would be in a bar at the early hours of the morning, but I would raise a glass for her most beautiful voice, artistry, and intelligence. She is an extraordinary inspiring artist.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

While I was a still student at the Royal College of Music, I had started also a performing career, one day I received a not-so-favourable review on my Mozart, obviously, heart sunken I reported to my professor of the piano and my mentor Phyllis Sellick about the review. With her calm beautiful smile, she said to me "Just remember, you can't please everybody" that was all she said. Still to this day, I can hear her say those sentences, It's so true her words applied not only to a musician's life but to life in general.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

Students know when they play badly or the passages they struggle with, but surprisingly they don't know when they do something well or when they produce a beautiful cantabile tone and so on. It's vitally important for them to know what they are doing right. I like the "Pygmalion effect" approach. I always give my students "Good news" first. Believing in students' potentiality and understanding empathetically when something goes wrong or does not happen. Reassuring them there is always a remedy to improve one's immediate problems in piano playing.
