About Joy

Welcome to your chess journey! I’m Joy, a dentist by profession, FIDE-certified International Chess Instructor, published author, international player, and the founder of Montreal’s The King’s Gambit Chess Academy. I’m a Top 1% Worldwide Lichess Player (Rating: 2544) and a Top-Ranked International Coach on Superprof (rated in the top 0.1% of all chess coaches in Canada).

With 40 years of playing experience and 29 years of coaching kids, teens, and adults worldwide, I’m passionate about helping students of all ages and levels unlock their full chess potential, whether you're just starting out or aiming for championship titles.

I believe chess should be both rigorous and inspiring. Together, we’ll explore strategy, tactics, opening secrets, endgame mastery, and the stories behind the moves in an interactive and engaging environment.

From Intuition to Mastery
Using modern tools and resources, I help you develop natural, intuitive moves, so the board “speaks” to you and reveals connections you never noticed before.

Beyond Memorization
Rather than relying on rote learning, I teach you to think like a chess player: patient, creative, and always three steps ahead.
