About Rainey
I'm a restoration artist based in Ludlow where I give lectures about the misericords in St. Laurence's Church. I am currently writing an article for the BAA regarding the St. Laurence's misericord carvings. My degree is in Medieval History Art & Culture from Trinity College Dublin where I have also studied History of European painting. Students can also gain understanding of art techniques from my knowledge in being a professional Gilder and Restoration Artist. Having studied as a mature student I have good rapport with all age groups of whom I've taught. I have worked with John Nethercott & Co in restoration projects and run my own small business from my workshop in Ludlow. My life is steeped in the world of art which is my passion.

In the History of Art it is indeed a vast time span between the beginning of Medieval Art and the end of Renaissance Art so I invite my students to tell me the areas they're interested in or are currently studying. Whether it be medieval stone crosses , manuscripts, psalters, or bestiaries; whether it be the work of Giotto, Massacio, Fra Angelico or Titian, Botticelli or Ghirlandaio: whether themes are of interest such as how The Virgin and Christ are represented in Renaissance art or why hell-mouths are pervasive, I structure each tutorial around a particular artist's or craftsman's work, a topic or sociological climate . We analyse a painting/drawing/illumination/carving or a theme, a style, and iconographical or symbolic meaning. We discuss cultural (Church and secular) or personal influences/inspirations surrounding a work. Therefore, this broad approach offers a stronger grasp on the meaning of a medieval or Renaissance work in its contemporaneous context. Recommended reading is given and guidance in essay /thesis /dissertation writing and structure can be arranged in hourly slots.
