About Ian
I have 2 years tutoring experience during my PhD where I facilitated tutorial sessions with small groups of 1st year mechanical engineering undergraduates. My responsibilities included identifying the learning needs of each student, explaining mechanical engineering concepts, going through worked examples, marking assessments, and providing meaningful feedback.
I also have experience as a teaching assistant for courses including CAD (computer aided drawing) software and 3D printing.

My teaching method prioritises working through problems together; I adopted this view during my undergraduate degree when I organised study sessions with my peers prior to exams, and maintained this ideology throughout my role as a tutor during my PhD. My view is that the best approach to learning a topic is through practice - for students getting started this can be daunting, particularly if they need more experience or if key information is missing/misunderstood; therefore my role is to assist students to better understand the problems in front of them by explaining what the problem is, working through examples together, and breaking down problems into more manageable steps so that the student can develop their skills, gain confidence through practice, and ultimately become capable of solving problems independently.
The first session is free and provides a great opportunity for us to have a mutually beneficial conversation:
