Guided class through coursework demonstrations and discussions to lead students in developing competencies in research, public speaking, persuasion, and interpersonal skills. In developing my teaching philosophy, I am inspired by a quote from bell hooks in Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom: “As a classroom community, our capacity to generate excitement is deeply affected by our interest in one another, in hearing one another’s voices, in recognizing one another’s presence.” This commitment to the community is at the heart of my teaching philosophy. I work to create a classroom where students know they are valued, where their voices matter, and where learning and growth happen collectively. My classroom is a space for curiosity, open dialogue, and collaboration, each of which I aim to foster through intentional activities that cultivate community. In my classroom, I actively demonstrate methods for tackling tasks or solving problems. I emphasize that each demonstration is an investment in your individual success. I encourage students to observe closely and ask questions. The learning objectives for this course include the following: Use appropriate organization or logical sequencing to deliver an oral message. Adapt an oral message for diverse audiences, contexts, and communication channels. Identify and demonstrate appropriate oral and nonverbal communication practices. Advance an oral argument using logical reasoning. Provide credible and relevant evidence to support an oral argument. Demonstrate the ethical responsibilities of sending and receiving oral messages. Summarize or paraphrase an oral message to demonstrate comprehension.
