About Amber
Seventeen years of teaching taught me that rushing students through endless new material rarely produces the genuine confidence and polish that comes from truly mastering fewer pieces deeply. My own turning point came after noticing that my most confident accomplished students were never the ones who had learned the most pieces but rather the ones who had learned a few pieces extremely well. That realization completely reshaped my teaching philosophy toward intentional focused depth rather than constant forward momentum for its own sake. I ask a lot of patience from my students since this approach can feel slower than lesson programs that constantly introduce new material every single week. The results consistently speak for themselves though with students developing a level of genuine polish and confidence that broader shallower approaches rarely achieve in my experience. After seventeen years I remain firmly convinced that true mastery of a few pieces builds far more lasting musical ability than a long list of half learned pieces ever could.

My teaching philosophy after seventeen years rejects the common rush to cover as many pieces as possible in favor of achieving genuine mastery over a carefully limited repertoire. I typically work with students on just a handful of pieces at a time allowing us to explore every technical and expressive detail in real meaningful depth. Technical exercises are chosen specifically to serve whatever piece we are currently mastering rather than existing as generic disconnected drills unrelated to actual repertoire. I find that students who deeply master a single piece develop transferable skills far more reliably than those who superficially attempt many pieces without ever truly finishing one. Progress is measured by depth of understanding and expressive control rather than sheer quantity of repertoire learned across a given term. Repetition is treated as valuable rather than boring since returning to the same piece repeatedly reveals new layers of technical and interpretive nuance each time. This deliberately unhurried approach requires patience from students used to constantly moving forward but it consistently produces genuinely polished confident performances rather than a long list of half learned pieces.
