About Iona Catherine

Hi! I'm Iona Catherine. I offer bespoke one-on-one music production, violin, songwriting, and composition lessons Online (Zoom) and in South East London.

I am an experienced tutor with 10+ years of hands-on professional and academic music experience. The bespoke and personalised music classes that I offer can benefit students of all levels and ages, whatever your goals and ambitions are.

I work with my students depending on their individual interests, pushing for the best sound and creations in each area with bespoke approaches. I employ plenty of discussion and interesting practical challenges that push the boundaries of what they already know to gain new knowledge that will last a lifetime.

I’ll work with you to provide flexible in-person and/or online one-to-one music lessons to bring you to the level that you want to reach. Whether that’s picking up the violin, getting into music college, taking to the stage, writing your own music, or releasing your own fully-produced songs to the world!

About the lesson

Have you ever wanted to write your own pieces of music? Are you looking for feedback on your work? My lessons are for anyone who wants to study the art of songwriting, composition, or film scoring.

In songwriting classes I will help you to develop your songwriting craft. We can look at everything from the basic components of a song and how they fit together, to the analysis of existing songs, to exploring a range of genres and styles.

We can investigate what contributes to great lyric writing; from linguistic techniques to clever word structures we will build your songwriting toolkit from the ground up. And we will study all the musical components that bring songs to life. This includes everything from considering effective song structures, to writing great hooks and riffs, understanding chord progressions, instrument choices, and so much more.

For more advanced students I am able to provide coaching and feedback to strengthen your existing practice. In composition classes I will help you to generate your compositional voice, whether as standalone pieces of music or as film scores. I will work with you to ensure the development of your understanding of all the components of a musical work: instrumentation, texture, timbre, tonality, harmony, tempo, rhythm and structure.

Through practical coaching I will set you tasks so that, even if you're a complete beginner, you can begin to compose your own music right away, usually via Musescore or Sibelius (two leading music scoring softwares). For film composers, we will also cover music production techniques in Ableton Live or Logic Pro. For more advanced students I am able to provide holistic advice and feedback to help you strengthen your existing digital practice, as well as bring new ideas in composition from my BA and MA qualifications.

And on top of all of that? Regardless of your chosen pathway, whether songwriting, composition, film scoring, or a combination of all three, I will help you overcome writer's block and learn how to thrive creatively with an abundance of ideas. I am a professional film scorer, songwriter, and composer.

Career highlights so far include scoring for GB Rowing's diversity ad campaign, composing for paralympic athlete Sophie Kamlish's short film 'Amputee Undefined, songwriting for metal artist Ehsan Imani, and the launching of my own music artist project 'Anora Air'.

Perfect! She was very lovely, listerned to everythin I had to say and even took the time to look am some songs I have written in her own time. Which was very very nice if her. I will be having songwriting and violin lessons in the future and cannot wait to learn.
