About Alicia

Hi, I’m Alicia! I’m a Criminology and Sociology tutor with a passion for helping students understand subjects that can sometimes feel much more complicated than they need to be.

I have a Master’s degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice and experience tutoring students across GCSE Sociology, A-Level Sociology and Level 3 Criminology. Alongside tutoring, I have a strong academic and practical interest in criminology, sociology, crime, media and social policy, which means I’m always looking for ways to bring the subjects to life beyond simply memorising a textbook.

My approach

I believe tutoring should be tailored to the individual student. Not everyone learns in the same way, and struggling with a subject doesn't necessarily mean that a student doesn't understand it. Sometimes they need a different explanation, more confidence, better exam technique, or simply someone to break a big topic down into manageable pieces.

In my sessions, I can help with:

* Understanding difficult theories and concepts
* Learning and applying key sociologists and criminologists
* Developing evaluation and analysis
* Essay and extended-answer structure
* Exam technique and understanding mark schemes
* Revision and retrieval techniques
* Coursework and assessment preparation
* Building confidence in answering questions independently

I like to make lessons interactive and conversational, rather than simply talking at students for an hour. We'll work through ideas together, use real-world examples and practise applying knowledge to exam questions so that students can see why*something matters, not just memorise it.

What I want students to get from tutoring

Of course, improving grades is important, but I also want students to leave sessions feeling more confident and capable than when they arrived.

My aim is to help students develop the skills to eventually say, “I know how this works!”, rather than feeling that they need someone else to give them the answer.

Whether you're looking for support with a particular topic, preparing for exams, catching up with missed content or simply wanting to push towards the next grade boundary, I’m happy to build sessions around what you need.

If you're looking for a tutor who understands both the content and the exam, I'd love to hear from you!

How my lessons work:
- £15 per hour - online via Google Classroom

- Meeting students where they are at (finding what they are comfortable with and where they need to improve)

- I tailor sessions rather than following a strict lesson plan. Some students learn better through conversing, others through games - learning isn't a one size fits all!

- I try to keep lessons different and engaging e.g. I encourage research in some sessions, others are very discussion-based

- I try to integrate exam questions into each session, after specific topics to make it easier for the students to understand how questions will be asked.

EXPERIENCE:
- Over a year's tutoring experience in GCSE, A-Level, and Level 3 Diploma
- Have worked with S.E.N students
- Master's degree in criminology: specifically focused on cultural criminology, zemiology and drug use
- Undergrad in Criminology and Sociology

Details

Most sessions should be coverable in a one-hour session HOWEVER some topics require 2 hours to fully understand!

A 2-hour session may be advised if I feel a student is particularly struggling in a certain subject area
