About Zelna
With an early career as special needs teacher and school counsellor , a Masters Degree in Clinical Child Psychology and as a Doctoral Psychiatry researcher my passion is in educating children on the importance of nurturing their brain health for optimal learning academically and for peak performance in day-to-day life.
My natural intuition for finding pragmatic solutions has led me to being a creative strategist. Rather than trying to "fix" what is wrong, with my experience and academic insights, I am always seeking practical outcomes for each child based on their own strengths and leadership capabilities.
My approach is fun, engaging and interactive and this is grounded in my early career in the classroom, running my own famiy coaching practice and behavioural consultancy for over two decades along with my lecturing experience to Bachelor of Education and Psychology students.

Many young people faced with special educational needs do not enjoy traditional learning and they struggle to excel within the confines of the traditional classroom. I have seen that when engaged, motivated and inspired they can build a love for lifelong learning and they flourish.
My approach is not just straightforward tutoring. I include diagnostic tasks in each session that help me to identify the key barriers to learning. This enables me to reflect on and build the most efficient and effective ways to offer support during my tutoring sessions with the aim being to build life skills that can easily be transferred and applied into daily living. This means that my session extends beyond just the time spent with me as my aim is to extend the skills transfer by encouraging personal responsibility and accountability.
I believe in motivating and inspiring young people as the ultimate pathway to learning and my sessions are based on a respectful approach with enough flexibility to allow personal growth. Through my playful rapport building abilities, I am not only a good teacher but a good communicator with children flourishing in all areas and not just academically.
One of my Neurodiverse clients once said to me: "Zelna, you build a bridge between the textbook and experience with your theory of helping."
Learning is as much about the process as the outcome and it becomes easier for my students to set goals and excel when they are supported in a structured way that engages them to think, understand, learn and apply.
This is what I enjoy doing as a tutor. I use a fun and playful approach as a bridge to building life skills, communication and confidence along with planting the seeds for lifelong learning, resilience, flexibility and adaptability. All essential skills to excel in life.
