About James

I am a guitarist from Mississauga, Ontario. I currently hold a Bachelor of Music in guitar performance degree from Wilfrid Laurier University, where I studied with Terry Mckenna. I am now pursuing a Master of Music degree in performance from the University of Toronto with Dr. Jeffrey McFadden.

I have a diverse history of performing experience, including rock bands, musicals, opera, and classical chamber groups.
I started playing guitar at the age of 12, primarily playing rock, pop, and metal music. At the age of 18, I branched out into mainly studying classical music.

Since beginning to teach guitar in 2018, I have developed a passion for it. I enjoy working with students to help them achieve their goals, whether that is recital or exam preparation or even just learning their favourite songs. I believe in tailoring lessons to each student and their musical interests.

About the lesson

I have taught guitar for over 5 years to students of various different styles. I focus on creating lesson plans for students that work toward their individual goals while at the same time promoting strong foundational skills on guitar as well as in music in general.

For the first lesson, I normally spend the majority of the lesson asking questions about the goals and interests of the student as well as evaluating their current skill level. If the student has not played guitar before I will start by teaching them foundational skills like how to hold their guitar as well as basic aspects of left and right-hand technique as time allows. From there I will create a series of lesson plans that try to incorporate music that the student is interested in playing while teaching them foundational skills that will allow them to further move toward their goals in the future.
