About Brendan
Hi, I'm Brendan! I am a Simon Fraser University (SFU) student who has been playing chess competitively for years. I currently hold a 1950 ELO rating on Chess.com and have competed in several official tournaments.
Aside from playing, I have a real passion for teaching. I started by teaching my younger sisters how to play from scratch, which taught me how to make chess fun, visual, and easy to understand for kids. I love helping young players build their confidence, sharpen their critical thinking, and fall in love with the game!

About your lessons
Chess is much more than just memorizing moves—it is about pattern recognition, focus, and problem-solving. Whether your child is an absolute beginner learning the board or an intermediate player trying to win their first tournament, I tailor my lessons to their exact level.
Here is how we will learn and improve together:
Playing Real Games: We will play actual matches together during our lessons. This is my secret weapon: by watching them play live, I can spot their real-time mistakes, find the exact "bottleneck" or bad habit holding them back, and fix it on the spot.
Targeted Problem Solving: Once we identify their main weakness (like rushing, missing blunders, or weak endgame play), we will focus on specific puzzles and exercises to turn that weakness into a strength.
Fun Tactics & Openings: We will study key tactical patterns and learn simple, solid openings so your child always starts their games with confidence.
Our First Class: We will play a friendly evaluation game to see where they are at, find their biggest area for improvement, and map out a fun plan to start leveling up their rating!
