About David

I love to write, but it can also be one of the most frustrating things I try to do, sometimes the ideas and the words just don't come, and especially with academic writing, it can feel like you're trapped in a labyrinth.

As an English teacher, I have taught writing to undergraduate students, graduate students, and international students and am very familiar with the challenges of writing for students from different backgrounds, at different levels, and for different projects in different areas of study.

I have also studied writing as a PhD student, completing my dissertation study on the different types of writing required of students for different assignments.

You have to write well to be successful in your studies and in work. I believe that writing becomes a lot easier when someone helps you understand what a specific assignment or task demands (which teachers don't always make clear) and find the best way to say what you are trying to say using your own voice.

My experience teaching writing and expertise as a PhD do help, but it's my own struggles with writing that I've worked to overcome and my care and understanding for students that I believe really make it so that I can help you produce better writing and feel better about it along the way.

About the lesson

My teaching approach is about listening to your challenges and successes with writing to help you figure out how to get at what you want from it, not just instructing you on a list of academic conventions. We will explore your writing project together, discuss your ideas and come up with ways that you can say what you mean cleanly, articulately, and in a way that is satisfying to you. I believe in demystifying writing, making it something you leave our sessions feeling more confident in your abilities in, while also leaving with clear take-aways and an excellent piece of written work.
