About Austin
Hello! My name is Austin Charles-Marcel (I go by Mr. Austin with my young students). As you probably already read, I love music and teaching what I have learned (and continue to learn) with my students. I specialize in teaching beginner to intermediate students, and I always try to provide an encouraging and positive learning environment.
My background is in music education (bachelor's degree and Maryland educator license), violin performance (master's degree), and orchestral conducting (performance certificate). I have taken Suzuki Method teacher training through to violin book 4.
Throughout my education journey, I have been privileged to perform as a soloist with the Montemorelos University Orchestra and the New England Youth Ensemble; perform as concertmaster with the New England Youth Ensemble, the University of Redlands Orchestra, and the La Sierra University Orchestra; and perform at Carnegie Hall with the New England Symphonic Ensemble on many occasions.
Since 2011, I have taught violin students in many settings, and I love helping them to develop their musical gifts and abilities while enriching their own lives and enhancing the lives of those around them.
I would love for us to explore how you can continue to grow musically!

For new students, I offer a free 30 min trial lesson. This is a great time for us to get to know each other and for me to get to know what level you are at and what musical goals you may have.
Our core learning will be centered in the following (not all in the same amounts at once):
* Musical enjoyment
* Body mechanics for playing
* Violin technique building
* Ear development
* Sight reading
* Basic composition/improvisation
Through the use of musical games, demonstration, and patient live feedback, we will work on the above.
The music books I use are the Suzuki Method violin books (I will indicate which one you need to purchase), other traditional method resources (I will share with you as needed or indicate what to purchase), and I will customize what we work on for you.
For beginner students who are children, parents can play a crucial role in helping the child to succeed. I believe in equipping the parent with tools for helping the child to develop a love for music along with effective and consistent practice habits.
Learning to play the violin (correctly) has the ability to help develop important life skills in the student like: perseverance, consistency, awareness of one's own body and feelings, etc.
Especially with young children (up to about age 8...depends on the child's level of independence), active parent involvement in each lesson and throughout the week can make a huge impact in the above mentioned.
Lessons will be held on Zoom, as such, adequate equipment will be needed in order for the lessons to run smoothly.
My lesson booking method is based on the month. So, no matter what part of the month we are in when we start, weekly lessons are booked for the remainder of the month at that time. After that, the weekly lessons are booked a full month at a time.
The minimum number of lessons that can be booked at once is 4 or 5 lessons (depending on how many weeks are in the given month and how many holidays are present on my lesson calendar).
When you sign up for lessons, it is understood that you are reserving a committed time slot for the lessons. Therefore, I kindly ask that you notify me more than 24 hrs in advance if the student will miss a lesson (in order to reschedule the lesson). Otherwise, the lesson will not be rescheduled.
There will be no refunds for lessons missed by the student.
Punctuality for lessons is important. If a student does not join the lesson within 15 min of the start time of the lesson, the lesson will be counted as a "no show," and the lesson will be forfeited.
Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions you may have. I look forward to hearing from you!

Perfect! Very informative, very clear about expectations, and patient.
- It was a pleasure meeting Hilton and having our first lesson. I am glad he is getting back to playing violin and that he has the interest in continuing to develop his musical skills. I look forward to our future lessons!Austin's response :

It is a pleasure to recommend Mr. Austin as a professional and talented violin instructor. My daughter began lessons with him at age 7 and continued for over a year. Throughout that time, Mr. Austin always arrived with a positive and encouraging attitude. He was patient and gave clear, concise instructions each time. Under his guidance, my daughter’s technical skills improved significantly. We feel very fortunate to have worked with such a dedicated, caring teacher and highly recommend him to anyone looking to learn violin.
My daughter started with Austin as a total beginner and studied with him for four years, both online and in person. She has since performed solo, and in orchestral settings. Not only is Austin technically amazing (if you have a chance to hear him perform in person, it is really quite transformative), he is so gentle and patient with students. He is kind, and yet meticulously tenacious in perfecting the student’s technique. We are so grateful to Austin for not only imparting his skill to our daughter, but for his and his lovely wife’s presence in her life. Under his tutelage, my daughter has blossomed from a girl who physically trembled at her first recital to being nonchalantly confident at being televised. Her love of music has become deeper and fuller, and Austin is definitely her favorite violin teacher of all time— “he really is just really nice”- high praise from a teenager!
Austin taught my daughter violin. He was one of the most patient, thorough and kind teachers my daughter has had. Austin has always gone above and beyond for his students, in and out of the classroom. One thing I appreciated were the prayers at the beginning of the lesson! Overall he is excellent, and I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a violin teacher.
Mr. Austin had been my son's violin teacher for a few years. He is very passionate about teaching children not only how to play violin but also to appreciate music. He is also a very patient teacher. There were some up and down moment while my son took the lessons with him, and he would try his best to keep my son calm and back on track. He did show interest in understanding my son as a whole person, and he tried to explain music in a way that we could understand. Thank you Mr. Austin for the inspiration and for encouraging my son in the journey of playing violin!
Austin was an amazing violin teacher for my two boys—patient, kind, and always encouraging. He made learning fun while helping them grow so much in skill and confidence. We’re so grateful for his time with us and will miss him greatly!
Austin is an amazing violin teacher, and I would recommend him for all ages of students! He is very kind and patient, and was able to help my technique, skills, and intonation greatly improve, even though I had already played the violin on my own for a few years. He helped me learn new songs and also brought other students together to play in recitals, which helped us learn and play together. He is also able to teach both in person and online very effectively! I still use the skills and lessons he taught whenever I practice and play the violin!
My 10-year-old daughter has been taking lessons with Austin, and I cannot say enough about how phenomenal he is as a violin teacher. From the very first lesson, it was clear that he not only has exceptional musical talent but also a true gift for teaching children. He is patient, encouraging, and able to explain concepts in a way that makes sense to young learners while still challenging them to grow.
What impressed me most is how he balances discipline with joy—my daughter is excited to practice, looks forward to lessons every week, and has grown tremendously in both skill and confidence under his guidance. He brings out the best in her, and she is developing not only as a violinist but also in her love and appreciation for music.
It is rare to find a teacher who combines technical expertise, teaching skill, and genuine care for their students the way Austin does. We feel so fortunate to have found him and recommend him wholeheartedly to anyone looking for an inspiring and outstanding violin teacher.
