About Ralph
My name is Mr Ralph Gilbert. I have studied at two universities, in the fields of IT (I used to be a computer programmer) and theology (the study of religion and God). I love reading: I read the plays of William Shakespeare, Jane Austen novels, etc. So you can be confident that I will teach you excellent English skills. I will teach you the four important facets of English: speaking, listening, reading and writing, .
I have interests in many things—reading, music, playing sport, shopping, cooking—so you learn from me the English you need to know regarding these topics and others too.
I get on well with people of all ages and like teaching school children, teenagers, and adults. I can teach just one student or a class. When I teach a student 1-on-1, I use various methods, e.g. reading out loud (practices reading, pronunciation and understanding); and having conversations about various things (favourite subjects at school, sports, foods, etc.). I really like teaching individuals because I can vary the things I teach according to the ability and interests of the student so that he/she will enjoy learning quickly and thoroughly.
I use similar methods when teaching a class by getting the whole class to participate, e.g. getting students to read a passage out loud, where the whole class can listen and learn. If a student answers a question, I will encourage the rest of the class to add other information about the topic, or correct the answer when necessary. Another method is from students to practise conversation skills in pairs.
With both a class or an individual I will definitely teach formal grammar; this includes rote learning (e.g. the various forms of a verb) with the class or student practicing out loud, and doing written tests.

I teach ESL with the following methods:
I can teach English to all ages, from children to older adults.
• Have students speaking informally and individually , e.g. the school they attend, subjects they like. If the student has no English at all begin with learning the alphabet (written and oral), then begin teaching the basics of grammar;
• Have students read out loud from a book, newspaper, etc. They will learn pronunciation, grammar (correct one sentence at a time), and comprehension (including new vocabulary);
• Get students to read a chapter of a book at home. Can include writing answers to questions, then correct them the next day. Can also have a group discussion about the chapter, asking questions about the plot, characters, difficult words.
• Divide class into pairs and get them to hold conversations with one another, starting at the basics (name, school attended, favourite foods, favourite sports, etc.)
• Choose an everyday topic, e.g. shopping, and bring to the class various related objects; e.g. different fruit and vegetables, drinks, etc. For adults, show them how to fill various forms (bank withdrawal, Centrelink). Another example, discuss the items you can buy in a chemist.
• For school children, get them to play board games (Monopoly, etc.), in which they practise reading, pronunciation, and vocabulary.
My lessons are 45 minutes in length.
