About Jonathan
I’ve been teaching for about 20 years. In addition to being certified in ELA and History, I am SEI certified, and have taught everything from basic language acquisition to advanced Platonic and Aristotelian philosophy, and everything in between. I’ve worked consistently in those 20 years with students as young as 6th graders, and as old as college students.
My diversity and depth of experience means that I can address students' needs on an individual basis, responding to those needs with particular activities that, over time and with practice, lead to successful outcomes. I’ve helped students pass the AZELLA test, their ACTs or SATs, write essays, read above their current level, and learn from primary sources - and that’s just in the last year or two.

I guide students to better understanding through questions and to better skills through directed intentional practice. Students learn from my lessons because they do the work and because my expertise lies in knowing what work to invite them to do and how to invite them to do it.
A typical writing lesson looks like a student responding to a prompt, getting some feedback from me based on the most prominent need they currently have in their writing, and engaging in an activity to work on that particular skill. Then, we repeat the process, building a variety of writing skills.
Students and I might explore a book together by looking closely at passages and discussing what we see, what it means, and what to make of that meaning. In these lessons, the questions I ask in our discussion guide the student toward a level of understanding they may not have reached on their own. More importantly, this structure allows students to learn, from the kinds of questions I ask, how to ask themselves similar questions on their own. That is, this method of instruction empowers students to be independent learners.
