About Gwen

I am a recent masters graduate from the University of Bristol (who will be undertaking a PhD in Linguistics next year). I am new to tutoring; however, it forms a huge part of my future career plans, and I have considerable experience working with students, giving feedback and proofreading classwork and essays. I have practical experience in Linguistics, English Language, Cultural Studies and Sociology - in theory, and practical application - and can offer great pre-exam tips and help and polishing reading and writing skills, in addition to subject tutoring.

About the lesson

I like to base each lesson on the specific needs of each individual tutee (and their parents!). If you’re focussed on a specific piece of homework, exam, essay or dissertation, I am here to help! I can provide templates, past papers and critical feedback – which we can talk through at length in our sessions with examples and exercises that will ensure retainment. I will work with you to pinpoint specific areas in which you are struggling or have room for growth, deconstructing the issue and collaborating with you to ensure the solution we build is one you are comfortable and confident using. On the other hand, if you prefer a more consistent or broader focus within a particular subject, I can create a range of activities each week that will help your development in an engaging way.

My personal research and style of learning is extremely interdisciplinary (sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology) and is a strong mix of theoretical and applied knowledge, so I am well versed in addressing several topics in a single academic space and I’m happy to combine subjects and work with you to cultivate a programme that will serve multiple areas of your learning. Additionally, I can provide formatting and proofreading services for essays and longer pieces of writing. As someone with dyslexia, I have personal experience in overcoming the hurdles it brings within academia and so can offer strategies and methods for reading and writing that I have found hugely impactful on my own academic development.

Ultimately, learning should be an enjoyable experience and I strive to create a fun, easy-going atmosphere in which you feel comfortable to discuss, ask questions (no matter how silly you might think they are!) and think critically to realise your own learning goals.
