About Ed

I'm a linguistics master's graduate of the University of Edinburgh, and a fluent speaker of Spanish and German. I've been giving private tuition in the languages since 2014.

In terms of my direct tutoring experience, I’ve received positive feedback from parents since beginning my work. I have taught languages in a primary school. I was president of the German society at the University of York which regularly held language conversation practices and I also taught ab-initio German to first years at the university when I was in my second year. I also have given lectures on the evolution of German over time and I have taught German and Spanish in more casual settings with my friends.

I believe I have a very creative approach to teaching. I have experience at various levels, from Highers, Nationals, GCSE, A-Level to IB - all of which require different approaches to teaching. However sometimes students’ needs are much more peculiar. For example, a current student of mine is learning for pleasure and enjoys German history a lot, which I try and work into classes, while other students have required more effort in confidence or conversation so that has become the main focus in my lesson planning.

I am particularly sympathetic to learner’s issues. I’ve completed a Bachelor's and Master’s in Linguistics from the University of York and Edinburgh respectively, where I gained a 91% mark in my Psycholinguistics module. I also completed modules in Bilingualism, Neurolinguistics and Cognitive Linguistics more specifically. This gives me a high knowledge of grammar and pronunciation of learning Spanish from an academic perspective, but I also have as a result a very practical approach to teaching. Knowing syntactic knowledge helps me understand the perspective of the learner’s experience, to give one example. I am particularly good at spotting issues with comprehension in language learning and can employ teaching strategies to help them overcome those specific issues in their language ability. Simple fluency in a language doesn’t mean you can explicitly describe what you know necessarily. I’m also very patient with learners (I’ve been there, learning languages is not the easiest) and I understand how to identify the elements of the language which should be learnt at the current stage of a student’s learning. I have successfully made grammar and pronunciation structures, rules and oddities accessible at a variety of levels. I believe I have a talent for languages that I can share.

I am also sympathetic to the learning process because of the advantage of my young age. I reached fluency relatively recently (18 years old) I have a good perspective on the stepping stones required to learn a language and on how I achieved fluency in Spanish so quickly myself (I completed a GCSE and full A-Level in Spanish from no previous knowledge in just two years).

I also have materials from my time as an A-Level and GCSE student in Spanish and from my experience since as a tutor. I also run an account on Memrise (a language learning website) where I have produced thousands of very popular vocabulary cards and mini lessons for Spanish A-Level students. I have also spent a lot of time in Spain and so have had regular conversational experience. The August before last, I was a translator for a wedding for my friend’s Spanish relatives).
