About Ashley
My background includes a Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics and TESOL, experience as a reading clinician, and several years of experience adapting literacy instruction for struggling readers. As a dyslexic myself, I understand the frustration and self-doubt that can come from literacy difficulties. Having worked through many of those challenges myself, I am passionate about helping students avoid unnecessary struggle and develop a clearer, more effective path forward.

Literacy and Dyslexia Support:
Reading is a complex series of mental processes that heavily relies on working memory, sound-symbol mapping, and rapid recall, all of which are skills dyslexic learners find difficult to master. Using explicit instruction, frequent repetition, and a back-to-basics approach, these skills can be strengthened and maintained to the level of their peers. However, it takes support, effort, and a willingness to learn.
Instructional Approach:
Instruction always begins by establishing a solid foundation in phonics work and building upwards from there one level at a time. This helps ensure no lower-level skills are slowing down a student who would otherwise be able to perform at a higher reading level. As gaps are filled, instruction progresses from phonics to syllables, words, sentences, and eventually grade-level reading, with the overall goal of helping students read at higher levels with stronger skills, less strain, and greater confidence.
Supporting Progress at Home:
For school-age students, parent involvement plays an important role in supporting meaningful progress. Lasting growth comes through consistent practice, and students benefit most when new skills are reinforced between tutoring sessions. Even a few minutes of focused practice at home can make a significant difference in literacy development. Families are kept informed about what we are working on, why it matters, and simple ways they can support learning outside of sessions. Tutoring provides targeted instruction and guidance, while home practice helps build confidence, strengthen skills, and encourage long-term success.
