About Lewis
- What kind of experience do you have?
While in Glasgow, I taught piano and drums regularly. My students were mostly beginners, though some came to me a little later in their development. I helped many of them with their preparations for ABRSM examinations.
Since moving to London, I have taught occasionally at the SE22 Piano School in East Dulwich.
I recently mentored a young composer from Greenock, who was writing a new piece for Inverclyde Schools' Concert Band. We conducted our lessons over Skype, which I am more than happy to do.
I also recently led a series of songwriting workshops at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, which was a great success. My mentoring sessions with the composition students were once again conducted over Skype.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I am currently in the process of updating my DBS Certificate.
- Where and with whom did you train?
At the Royal College of Music in London, I studied composition with Mark-Anthony Turnage.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
Since December 2017, I have been a member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians.

I am a Scottish composer, pianist and teacher, based in London. Most recently, I have worked at Glyndebourne, Scottish Opera and the National Opera Studio.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach Piano and Composition (including music theory). I also offer Drum Kit lessons.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
My studies began in Glasgow, with four years at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. After graduating with a BMus HONS in Composition (first class), I moved to London to continue my studies at the Royal College of Music. I graduated from there in 2015 with an MMus in Composition (distinction).
- How much do you charge?
For Piano and Composition lessons, I charge £15 for half an hour and £30 for an hour. When I am required to travel, I will add the cost of this to my fee.
Discounts are available when several lessons are booked and prepaid at once: for example, a booking of four half-hour lessons would cost £55 plus expenses (a saving of £5). A booking of eight half-hour lessons would cost £110 plus expenses (a saving of £10).
- Where do you teach?
I am based in New Cross Gate, and am able to teach from the piano in my home. I am able to travel to teach you from your home, if you wish - anywhere within South East London is very manageable, and I am also happy to travel within central London.
- When are you available?
As a freelance composer, I am in control of my own hours - therefore I can be very flexible with my teaching hours. Mostly, I prefer to teach evenings - Monday to Wednesday, and Friday. Saturday morning is also a possibility.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I have experience of teaching all ages, from Beginner to Intermediate/Advanced.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I am able to prepare students for exams through ABRSM or Trinity, as well as any exams they may face in school. In the past I have also prepared students for auditions for music scholarships.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I am able to conduct Composition and Music Theory lessons via Skype (or FaceTime, if you prefer).
- Do you have a personal message for students?
My lessons will be tailored to your specific needs and interests. Regardless of whether you are preparing for exams, or simply wish to play music that you love, I am here to provide a fun and inspirational learning environment.
