My aim is to keep things as simple as possible .
I enjoy breaking abstract concepts down to make them more palatable to my students, which I have found to be extremely effective from previous experiences.
Communication is key, and students should let me know if they don't understand a particular topic or need more examples to aid them.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

During my undergrad degree, I had always been drawn to the theoretical side of Economics and I found I had quite the aptitude for Econometrics, as evidenced by my good grades in it. I would offer my explanation of concepts to my peers, and they found this to be quite beneficial, and I enjoyed teaching them. I then decided to offer these services as me as student knew how valuable my services could be. I have never looked back since.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I primarily teach Econ and Econometrics. My master's degree is in the aforementioned.

Within Economics I like the following topics:

DSGE models, Real Business Cycles, anything on Financial Macro econometrics, Game Theory, Portfolio Theory, Basic models of the Macroeconomy (Mundell Fleming for example), all topics in undergrad Macro and Micro.

Within Econometrics I like the following topics:

Time series, Applied Micro Econometrics, Spurious regressions, Cointegration, Forecasting, Monte Carlo simulation, Derivation of: OLS, RLS, most parameter estimates/derivations in time series, Maximum Likelihood Estimators, and so on. All topics from undergrad to postgrad level can also be covered.

Topics I do not like: Micro essays based on utility theory and Macro essays on the Solow growth model.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I would say my chemistry teacher from secondary school was very inspirational. He was able to bring sheer passion into his role as a teacher, and it was quite infectious as it was the main reason why I wanted to do Chemistry at University; later switching to Econ as I found this was a better fit for the skill set I was cultivating.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I think strong communication is essential. When you have this you also need to add in reliability and ability to break things down into the mix. You will be well on the way to being a great tutor. Time management and trustworthiness are also essential in building a good teacher-student relationship.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

"All models are wrong, but some are less wrong and may even be useful"
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

One big challenge is definitely understanding how everything fits together. When it comes to certain topics you may not fully understand it unless you read a case study to see how it is applied or take a deep dive into the maths and stats rules to see how they work. It is important to keep learning and grow your knowledge base. Therefore, I continually test my knowledge on topics to ensure I fully understand before deciding to teach it.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion is more so learning. I think you cannot really be a good teacher if you are not willing to keep on learning.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?

My attention to detail, good student feedback, and clear/concise communication.
