About Leo

Hi! I’m Leo and I offer bespoke guitar, piano and songwriting tuition online and in-person within London.

I have 20 years' experience as an artist in the music industry. As the songwriter and singer in the band Ten Fé, my songs have over 100m streams on Spotify and I have been signed to both major and independent record labels (SONY/Pias). My music has appeared on Radio 1, 6 Music, XFM, and the Jukebox of the Old Vic on Eastenders (!). I have performed at a host of music festivals (Glastonbury/Bonarro/Bestival), and toured internationally across the US and Europe. Throughout this time, I have performed with acts such as Fontaines DC, Young Fathers, Adam Ant, and Mumford and Sons. My music has appeared in TV series, films, commercials and video games (Made in Chelsea, The Wrong Missy, T-Mobile, Lincoln Cars), and has been featured in publications such as the NME, Interview Magazine, The Guardian, and I-D.

I have over 15 years' experience of teaching music to all abilities and ages. I have taught one-on-one sessions, in classrooms, in workshops and to people with learning and social difficulties. Whoever you are, and whatever your experience, we will find the right level for you, and I will offer all my experience and enthusiasm to help you develop in the way you want to.

I am self-taught as a songwriter and guitarist, and was classically trained in the piano. I have a good knowledge of music theory and technique. I have diplomas in both Fine Art and Creative Writing, and have completed professional courses in poetry, clowning and psychotherapy. One of the things I hold most important in terms of creative learning is that it is not constricted to one field, or discipline - you need to follow your instinct wherever it takes you.

About the lesson

Have you ever wanted to write your own songs? Perhaps you have been writing for some time and would value feedback? Or maybe you’d like to write, but don’t feel proficient enough in your instrument to do this … I can help you!

In my lessons we dive into the craft of songwriting. We analyse the songs you love and how they were written; we look at your own playing and creativity in order to develop the skills you already have; and we work towards the goal of finishing work and finding your own creative voice.

My approach to teaching music is student-led. Ultimately the learning of music is down to you, so it's my responsibility to find out what you like and what excites you. We will then develop a programme to follow over our time together to achieve what goals you have.

If you are beginning to write songs for the first time, we will start with the rudiments of song structure, and various techniques to free up the creative imagination. Some of these will be influenced by creative writing and performance, it is an opportunity to really follow what excites you.

If you are more experienced and already have a group of songs - finished or unfinished - that you would like to build on, we will work towards deepening your understanding of your own work. We will experiment in different points of view and style, as well as following creative impulse and whimsy in order to surprise yourself, and avoid writer’s block.

Writing, recording and releasing music is something I have done all of my life - I love it - and I am happy to answer questions and discuss various practical aspects of the music industry and how to navigate it professionally from the POV of an artist.

I am DBS certified. I also offer some lessons at a lower cost if affordability is a barrier and I would be happy to discuss this with you. I am new to the platform and will post reviews as soon as I have them.
