Klerksdorp, once the largest city in the North West Province, is situated some 170 km south-west of Johannesburg. Named after the first magistrate (landddrost) in the area, Jacob de Clercq, it was founded between 1837 and 1838 on the Schoonspruit River which flows through it. Then a town, Klerksdorp grew rapidly as an important mining (after 1932), industrial and grain-producing centre.
In this, the second largest city in the province, Afrikaans is the second most spoken language. It is an important language, as knowledge of the language could translate into employment opportunities, as well as impact on upward mobility in the workplace. Many business houses, although this is changing now, were previously Afrikaans orientated and, so, a working knowledge of the Afrikaans language was, and still is, beneficial. If you fancy yourself as a writer or journalist, the Klerksdorp Record, which publishes in English and Afrikaans, may open doors which will allow you to pursue your journalistic goals. Having the ability to communicate in both languages may just be the clincher for you!
The benefits of learning a new language are numerous. It influences brain power in so many ways. It contributes to improved memory, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. It enhances one’s ability to concentrate, improves listening skills and the ability to multi-task. It may also impact on your performance in other learning areas, can positively impact on your ability to make informed decisions and, as a bonus, can also improve your proficiency in your first language. Wow! How about that? Awesome, is how young people would describe it or rad (as in radical)!
The route that you follow will be dependent on your learning style as well as your personality. Gregarious type of folk would, almost, naturally elect to attend classes or small group sessions, while more private individuals would opt for one-to-one sessions with a tutor, in person or via an online platform.
Group sessions would be advantageous to you if you are inspired by the energy, camaraderie and support that is available to you in a group. Classmates help you feel less isolated at a time when you may be learning something, like a language, which is little known or totally foreign to you. Someone, in the group, may help you to laugh at your little stumbles, especially when you hear that s/he mispronounces Afrikaans words in exactly the same way that you do. This bit of comic relief may be all the encouragement you need to proceed with your elected course of study with gusto! Out of these group sessions could flow after-class study sessions, where you and a classmate, or two, get to practise Afrikaans in the privacy, comfort and security of one of your residences. Daily practice would be of tremendous benefit to everyone in your little circle. This would reinforce and consolidate newly learned concepts, pronunciations and sentence constructions.
If you are already enrolled for Afrikaans courses/ classes or have a smattering of Afrikaans in your repertoire, you can consider taking extra Afrikaans lessons. Again, you determine which route you follow.
That wonderful resource, the Internet also has numerous sites which offer tuition and/ or assistance if you want to improve your proficiency in Afrikaans. You can also practise your pronunciation of words or sentences against the standard pronunciation provided by various sites, like Google speak. Your access to resources here is virtually uncountable. You will have online dictionaries, of various kinds at your fingertips. Dependent on your particular need, you could choose from a bilingual or a monolingual dictionary, or a thesaurus. The bilingual dictionary is helpful because it assists you whether you’re translating from Afrikaans into English or vice versa. The second dictionary supplies definitions of Afrikaans words, while a good thesaurus would provide multiple synonyms and explain their use in specific contexts.
This resource, the Internet, would also lead you to schools, colleges and universities which may be close to your location. Browse through these at your leisure while you decide where and how you would like to learn. The final parameter, which you need to consider, is your budget and its constraints. This might be pivotal when deciding on your course, institution or tutor of choice!
A good tutor is an indispensable resource. One who has several years of experience of teaching Afrikaans, at various levels, would probably be the best person to select. Such a tutor would have been exposed to the Afrikaans curriculum at various levels and would have encountered the most common mistakes students make, especially those who have little or no grounding in Afrikaans. A younger tutor may be one you prefer, because he or she is closer to you in age and has possibly, just recently passed through the same curriculum you are facing. S/he may be easier for you to relate to.
What’s great, about a tutor, is the variety of activities s/he can aid in. This can range from helping with homework, getting a novice understanding and speaking Afrikaans, all the way through to exam preparation. One of the greatest things a good tutor can do for you is build your confidence.
Superprof has a team of dedicated tutors who will, very capably, lead you through the process of acquiring a new language. There is no question that you will be in good hands were you to commit to follow a course of study with one of these vetted professionals. Take a calculated risk! You have absolutely nothing to lose!
