About Elissa
As someone with master's degrees in both Professional Counseling and Nutrition, I’ve spent years studying how the brain functions and how we learn. I’ve mastered the art of studying and research for myself, but I also know that my way isn't the only way. Everyone learns differently! I’m excited to work with you to figure out how your brain processes information best, and to help you discover the personalized study habits that will make learning feel easier and more rewarding.

1. Teaching Method and Techniques
My instructional methodology is grounded in how people process and retain information, using the VARK model (Visual, Auditory, Reading/Writing, Kinesthetic). Rather than treating learning styles as rigid categories, I use them as different entry points to make learning easier. Research shows that the most effective learning happens when we combine different senses and methods.
Here is how I adapt my techniques to match your preferred learning style:
Visual Learners: I use clear diagrams, flowcharts, and color-coded mind maps to help you see how different parts of a concept connect.
Auditory Learners: We talk through topics together. I ask questions and have you explain concepts back to me aloud to lock in your understanding.
Reading/Writing Learners: We make structured comparison tables, lists, and written summaries to turn complex topics into clear, precise notes.
Kinesthetic Learners: We practice with hands-on exercises, like working through real-world scenarios, solving practical problems, or analyzing live-drawn charts.
2. Typical Lesson Plan (60-Minute Session)
To keep your brain active and prevent fatigue, sessions are structured into clear, manageable steps:
Minutes 0–05: Quick Warm-Up & Review
Activity: A brief, low-stakes quiz or discussion about what we covered in the last session. This wakes up your brain and prepares you for new information.
Minutes 05–20: Core Concept Breakdown
Activity: We introduce the day's main topic using a mix of learning styles.
Execution: We might draw a quick chart (Visual), talk through the main ideas (Auditory), write down key definitions (Reading/Writing), or map out a practical example (Kinesthetic).
Minutes 20–45: Active Practice & Problem Solving
Activity: We work through practice questions or real-world scenarios together.
Execution: You will practice applying the concept, explaining not just what the correct answer is, but why other options do not work. This builds true understanding rather than just memorization.
Minutes 45–55: Teach-Back & Summary
Activity: You summarize the main takeaways of the lesson in your own words. This helps identify any areas that still feel a bit confusing.
Minutes 55–60: Weekly Action Plan
Activity: We set specific, manageable study tasks for you to do before our next session, tailored to how you learn best (like making flashcards, drawing a diagram, or writing a quick summary).
3. What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor
Adaptation: I adjust my explanations, pace, and examples to match your current level, pivoting immediately if a concept feels too easy or too difficult.
Active Learning Focus: I do not just ask you to read or listen passively. Every session is designed around active practice and problem-solving to make sure the information actually sticks.
Safe, Low-Stress Environment: I provide a completely judgment-free space. You can make mistakes, ask "silly" questions, and test out ideas until you feel completely confident.
Clear and Structured Guidance: I break down overwhelming subjects into clear, step-by-step pathways, helping you build study habits that save you time and reduce stress.
4. Target Audience (Who the Lessons Are For)
My lessons are designed for learners at various stages of their academic and professional journeys:
High School & College Students: Anyone looking to master core subjects, improve study habits, or prepare for major exams.
Test Preppers: Students studying for standardized exams who need to learn how to analyze questions and manage test anxiety.
Adult Learners & Professionals: Individuals returning to study, learning a new skill, or preparing for professional certifications.
Anyone Struggling with "How to Study": Learners who feel overwhelmed by information and want to discover the specific study methods that work best for their unique brain.
