I ask students to write paragraphs about anything they want, starting with very simple subjects, and then working up to more complex subjects. I go over sentence structure and grammar, being sure that the paragraphs actually communicate what is intended. With this iterative process, I learn the student's strengths and weaknesses, and then teach the value of an outline in more complex tasks. Finally, I teach students how to write and organize paragraphs in a way that best accomplishes the goal of communicating what is intended.
