About Steve

I am a retired senior software engineer and architect. In my career I progressed from programmer through senior engineer, lead engineer, chief engineer and independent consultant, working at the largest commercial software house in the UK and for large organisations including BP, the Ministry of Defence, the Department for Work and Pensions and more. I have experienced the rapid growth and changes of the software industry in the last 40 years and survived and thrived because of my solid grounding in fundamental software engineering principles, which remain unchanged (although each generation of programmers gives them a new name!). I have a City & Guilds trainers' qualification and have been delivering classroom and one-to-one training since the 1980s.

I spent a lot of time and effort in my career in coaching and supporting young programmers to become software engineers. The standard of IT education in the UK is broadly poor and I am quite passionate about teaching aspiring programmers to be able to understand the problems they are required to solve and to make the best use of their development tools to deliver that solution. The two go hand-in-hand: you cannot become a good programmer by simply learning all of the syntax of your preferred language and at the same time you cannot deliver the best solution unless you DO know your programming tools to an expert level.

My tuition is geared towards this aim.

About the lesson

You will work within the framework used to teach new recruits at major software houses. Principles of object-oriented programming, common programming patterns, user-interface techniques, interacting with databases, web-programming techniques and more, you will learn the practical skills needed to work in the software industry.

You can choose the programming language we'll work in, from Java, C#, C++, Python and any of the popular JavaScript variants, such as Angular and React.

Lessons are one-hour sessions, delivered over MS Teams, Zoom or Skype and can be timed to fit your schedule. There will be homework!

About you: you will be bright, motivated and with a capacity for hard work. You should be computer-literate but not necessarily a geek - an aptitude for solving complicated problems by breaking them down into connected chunks of simplicity is the key to good programming. You must respond well to both praise and criticism. You will need to manage your time.
