About Liann

I am a self taught designer with 7 years of professional experience in the industry - going from a part time graphic designer, UX designer, UX/UI designer to a now, Senior Product Designer who has had to interview potential design candidates. What this means is- I had to learn the hard way what the industry best practices were, how to manage projects and stakeholder expectations and the design process so I have a lot of hands on practical experience. I also understand the struggles of landing your first job and standing out in a competitive market.

Having also been the person interviewing potential candidates for design roles, I also have good insight on what employers are looking for and the pieces you should present! Additionally, I have worked in a variety of different company types (agency, consultancy, in-house). The expectations and ways of working differ quite a bit between the different types and I aim to arm you with all the knowledge I have!

General assembly courses and the like are quite theory heavy. My aim with my teachings and guidance is to offer more pragmatic advice and learnings to help with what you might expect in the real-world. I've found that your design approach will-and should differ depending on the type of stakeholder you have and the problem you're trying to solve. I hope to give you the confidence and knowledge you need to fulfil your ambitions! :)

Heard a bit about UX/UI/Product design but not sure if it's for you? I can answer any questions you may have and walk you through what you can expect your job to entail and the expectations as well as any challenges you may face. UX and UI as well as the what you're expected to do differs from industry to industry (especially in Australia) and depending on the type of employer you have. Expect to leave with a good understanding on whether or not this career path is something for you!

Give me the Lot! (Multi 1hr sessions) - please select one of the pack offerings

Ready to dive deeper into the details and get the skills you need to tick the boxes and expectations that an Employer will have of someone of your skill sets? This will be a guided step by step course - I recommend at least 2 sessions a week (1hr ish each) - until you feel confident or ready to self-manage - We can talk about this in our initial free chat. Alternatively, if you have a bit of experience already, feel free to let me know what you'd like to improve on and I can come up with a plan before we start to see if it's to your liking! :D

1. We will start on the basics. What to expect and what your job will entail. I will also present several design challenges and/or briefs that we will work through the coming sessions (So expect to be doing some homework!) :D

2. We will start working on how to use Figma and how to set up files so you can get started designing! This will go over several sessions as I think it will be important to go over web design, application design, mobile design as well as the different ways your devs will build the app ( i.e. native or web as this will have an impact on the limitations on how you can design something)

2.5 Homework review! We will go through the different design challenges, and understand how to work in sync with the devs. I will give critique and feedback, some technical and some as a stakeholder. This will help you train the way you think and get you more comfortable with being challenged. I will really strive to make this as realistic as possible so you can feel confident in your work!

3. As we go through the design challenges, I will also train you on how to present your designs, as someone who has had to present the majority of my work to a variety of different stakeholders (the easy and the difficult ones), I want to set you up for success, as simply designing will only get you so far. However, if you're looking to be great and confident in what you do, understanding how to talk and present is imperative.

4. Portfolio building and interview training. As someone who has been on the hiring end a few times, I understand what employers are looking for as well as the common questions they ask. While a nice shiny portfolio can get you the interview, what you talk about and how you present will be the determinant of whether or not you land the role!

General things I will ensure that I cover:

* Web vs Mobile | Responsive design vs Native
* How to bridge the gap between design and dev. (How do we work with devs?)
* Learning how to use Figma! Both beginner and advance. How to prep files for the devs!
*How to create design patterns
*How to design in a way that's scalable and easy to implement.
* Techniques in presenting designs.
*Portfolio advice and interview training
* Steps of product design, discovery, definition and development (Quite common in agencies and consultancies)
* How to approach different projects - this can include the stakeholder type (mature, immature, niche industries, etc) as well as the problem space trying to be solved.

Product design is one of those industries where pragmaticism is more realistic than the theory. As someone who had no official training in it, I understand the trials and challenges you can face if you're new; but also how overwhelming all the different design possibilities and problems you can face can be.
