About James
Hi, my name is James and I am a competitive chess player based in Cardiff.
Since returning to serious chess at university after playing as a child, I've managed to win a series of prestigious FIDE tournaments in and around Wales. I'm very proud to call myself the Welsh Rapidplay Champion, and Cardiff Club Champion for two years running.
know from experience that improving at chess is not always straightforward. Progress requires consistent work, but it also requires focusing on the right things. One of the biggest challenges for modern players is navigating the huge amount of online chess content and identifying the resources that will actually help their own game.
Because I began studying chess seriously later than many competitive players, I understand the improvement process from a student’s perspective and can help players at a wide range of levels. My aim is to provide clear, practical coaching that helps students identify weaknesses, build effective study habits, and make steady progress over time.
Whether your goal is to learn the basics, improve your online rating, or compete successfully in tournaments, I would be happy to help.
James

I believe the best way to find areas of improvement is to analyse your games for mistakes, and really dig into where you went wrong (or right!).
A typical lesson from me would include some warmup puzzles, followed by some analysis of either Grandmaster games or your own. Finally we would finish with some targeted puzzles to work on specific and recurring mistakes in your game.
As in my own chess, I focus on understanding and calculation rather than memorisation, and a lesson may hone in on any of the following topics:
- Openings
- Strategy and Positional Play
- Important Endgames
- Typical Tactical Motifs
- Practical Play and Time Management
Afterwards I send out a lesson recap of everything we covered with the key points in order to make absorbing material easy, and all the material we covered is accessible in a lichess study after the lesson.
