About Aliya
I hold a B.A. in Psychology from NYU Abu Dhabi and am currently completing a Master's in Human-Technology Interaction at Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands, where I was awarded the Amandus H. Lundqvist Scholarship for academic merit.
English is not my first language. I grew up speaking Kazakh and Russian, and I built my own fluency from the ground up, the same process I now guide my students through. That journey took me from Kazakhstan to university in Abu Dhabi, a research position in New York, and now graduate study in the Netherlands, so I understand both the challenges and the payoff of learning a new language firsthand.
I bring a professional, structured approach to every lesson. My background is in human-centered design and behavioral research, which means I plan carefully, track progress with real attention, and adjust my teaching based on what actually works for each student rather than relying on a fixed script. You can expect punctuality, clear communication, and lessons built around your specific goals, whether that's academic English, professional fluency, or preparing for life abroad.

My approach comes from two places: psychology and human-centered design. I studied brain and cognitive science at New York University and now research how people interact with AI and technology, so I spend a lot of my time studying how people actually learn, not just how they're "supposed to." I bring that same lens to tutoring.
Instead of a one-size-fits-all curriculum, I start by figuring out where a student's real friction points are: grammar, vocabulary, confidence speaking out loud, or simply not enough practice using English in real situations. From there, I build lessons around active use: conversation, role-play, and real-world tasks rather than passive drilling. I also iterate constantly. If something isn't clicking, I adjust the method to a student's needs. This approach comes directly from my UX design work, where I run usability tests, watch where people get stuck, and redesign based on that.
