I tailor my lessons according to the individual I am tutoring. Interviews can be tough, especially when it is your first one. Therefore providing the guidance they need and helping them gain confidence can help them perform really well in their interviews.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

When going through the process of attending medical school interviews in year 13, I realised how daunting it can be to attend your first interview with no training at all. It is not a skill we are taught at school so it feels very foreign and scary. I've always enjoyed teaching children and as communication is one of my strengths I felt this would be a good chosen field to tutor in.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

Medical school interviews test a wide range of skills as well as your genuine passion to become a doctor. Some students may have all of this but not be able to get this across in interviews which is where I would like to help them and make a difference. Ideally for the first few sessions I will teach students common interview topics i.e. problems within the NHS, medical ethics, graph analysis etc. Then I go onto giving students mock interviews and giving detailed feedback on how they can improve each answer. Every student is different therefore I aim to tailor my teaching according to the individual so that I can bring out their potential in their upcoming interviews.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My biology teacher from school was a great inspiration and she was someone who always believed in me and encouraged when I was applying to medicine.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Patience, understanding, kindness, determination, resilience and responsibility.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I tripped over and fell whilst walking in at the start of one of my medical school interviews but still managed to complete the interview and receive an offer so I guess always keep calm and carry on 
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Interviews can be very stressful which may reduce a person's ability to get their potential across. However I really believe that with practice, you can reduce nerves and be successful!
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Medicine and teaching are both areas I am very passionate about and someday in the future I hope to be able to have a full time job that combines both. But for now I am really enjoying working as a doctor and then tutoring on Superprof during my spare time.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?

I listen to my students and make sure that they are in control of the lessons. Whatever they need help in, I am there to support them and do the best I can in improving them in those areas.
