About Izzy
I’m a motivated, approachable and experienced professional tutor and graduate medical student at Bart's and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry. I have previously completed a Master's degree in Immunology of Infectious Disease at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, after graduating from Durham University with a first-class honours degree in Biomedical Science in 2017. My professional experience includes medical writing in the medical education sector, helping to produce educational materials on cutting-edge medical research for healthcare professionals internationally. I have always loved to learn new things and problem-solve, and since beginning tutoring, bolstering my students against the toughest aspects of their studies in order to rediscover and develop their own intrigue in the classroom. Of particular importance to me is building my students' confidence, their ability to independently explore their subject and find ways to be self-aware in their learning and achievement, to find the best way for them to succeed and feel positively about their accomplishments. I have 8 years of tutoring experience, and have taught a range of subjects including Biology, Psychology and English, at both GCSE and A-Level while studying for my degrees. This has been through lessons given face-to-face and via an online classroom and includes one-off booster sessions, short term tuition to help my students catch up or crack a particularly difficult subject, or year-round tuition to support my student through the academic year. Additionally, over the course of 6 months, I volunteered as a teaching assistant at a primary school, helping with independent work, reading practice, and I even had the opportunity to lead a biology class! This, and my work as a workshop leader for a STEM experience day hosted for gifted and talented children interested in science, technology and maths, has honed my ability to deliver lessons to a variety of students for the purpose of enhancing formal education and for driving fun and curiosity through new experiences. My teaching style is flexible and is built around the individual learning needs of each student, which we explore in an initial trial lesson. I encourage a multi-faceted approach to learning any subject, and help my students also develop independent study skills they can take forward with them in their future learning. My lessons focus around revisiting content in class, exploring different resources, encouraging independent study techniques, and exam preparation. I work using an exposure-exploration-rehearsal-application model. 1. Exposure aims to familiarise students with broader concepts and vocabulary. 2. Exploration works to read into the subject in more depth and understand physiological processes and principles. 3. Rehearsal involves revisiting the content in the form of questions, discussions, and recap where needed. We also discuss approaches to independent revision. 4. Application then works by students practising exam questions and creating model answers.
Recommendations
Recommendations are written by the tutor's friends, family, and acquaintances.
We have had many tutors over the years and Isobel was by far and away the best. She is personable, organised, engaging, patient and able to explain difficult concepts in a clear and accessible fashion. Isobel was also extremely proactive in providing additional materials that would help consolidate what had been learnt or extend it. I have no hesitation in recommending Isobel.
Isobel has been tutoring our son with A level biology and has always been reliable. She is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about her subject and has proved a great motivator.
