About Julie

- What kind of experience do you have? I am teaching a variety of ages and levels of experience including beginner adults, pre-school children and experienced players. I am the director of a number of groups for adult recorder players producing much of my own music arrangements. I have also conducted for the Society of Recorder Players and held bespoke workshops for adult and children's groups. As a recorder player I have experience performing in numerous concerts including St Martin-in-the-Fields, Lincoln Early Music Festival, Old Royal Naval Chapel Greenwich and in the International Exhibition of Early Music. As a member of Ensemble Tramontana I was winner of the Trinity College of Music Early Music Competition 2011. I now perform with BRLO, British Recorder Light Orchestra as well as various solo and ensemble performances. My music specialism is Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque Music. I also play Viola da Gamba and medieval percussion. - Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate? Yes. References available upon request. - Do you belong to any professional organisations? ERTA (European Recorder Teachers Association) ISM including public liability insurance. I am a patient and friendly recorder teacher with experience of teaching all ages from Early Years to Adults. I am happy to discuss your specific requirements for lessons, group tuition or workshops. - Which subject(s) do you teach? I teach the Recorder, Music Theory and Chamber Music Coaching to all ages and levels of experience. My particular focus is Early Music. I am also available for workshops on the recorder or group coaching. I also teach the recorder to early years children using the Suzuki Method. I am an experienced recorder player and teacher of both adults and children. I believe that recorder should be taught from the beginning with the right level of technical training, understanding of the instrument, and general musicianship. This means the student has a far more satisfactory learning experience and a better playing standard is the result. I also am happy to support pupils entering exams on any instrument to help with aural, scales, sight reading etc. - Tell me about your qualifications. I studied at Goldsmiths College, London gaining a BMus (Hons) in Music in 1998. I studied at Trinity College of Music in the Early Music Faculty for two years on a flexible programme and 2 years of the Masters programme, studying recorder with Rebecca Miles and Philip Thorby and Viola da gamba with Alison Crum. I have also had recorder tuition, courses and masterclasses with Piers Adams, Pamela Thorby, Matthias Maute and Bart Spanhove. I am also a Suzuki Method Recorder teacher (Level 2), one of only a handful of qualified Suzuki recorder teachers in the UK. I have also attended workshops on Dalcroze and Kodaly methods to teach early years children. Prior to teaching music I have had 12 years as a management trainer in the retail and licensed sectors. During this time I also completed an Advanced Diploma in business and leisure retailing. - How much do you charge? For music lessons I charge a basic one-to-one fee of £40/hr for lessons in Crystal Palace. Subject to location I can travel to give lessons but will charge a travelling fee. I also often recommend joint lessons which is a cost effective and efficient way of having tuition. Early years Suzuki tuition is charged at £14/20mins or £20/30mins for lessons. For group coaching or workshops please contact me and I will be happy to discuss arrangements. - Where do you teach? I live in Crystal Palace, London, but in some circumstances I can travel to teach pupils in their own homes depending on locations. For longer, less frequent sessions I may be able to travel further. For larger groups I can also arrange suitable venues if required. The recorder groups I run are held in Forest Hill, Pimlico and Crystal Palace. - When are you available? I am available throughout the week at various times. Please contact to discuss. - Which ages and levels do you teach? I can teach all ages from children to adults. Complete beginners to more advanced players. If you are an adult who wants to return to playing after many years I can help. I can support you with lessons until you feel more confident and wish to join a recorder group. For more advanced players I can hold regular lessons to improve technique and work towards concerts or exams.
