About Lorna
Doing Journalism has allowed me to explore alternative methods of media; such as, web coding journalism and creating and editing TV and radio, while learning the theory and history behind it. I was the treasurer of the Journalism Society, and I worked for the department filming events in and out of university. I also work with primary schools; one of which helped me raise over 800 items of food for a local foodbank.
When I applied for university, I was running the school newspaper and I had a lot to talk about in my personal statement; but it put a lot of pressure on my exams as the entry requirements were high. I can empathise with students who have a lot riding on their exams, and I want to help as much as I can.
I have the awareness of what hoops need to be jumped through for humanities exams and essays, but I can help make getting there more fun for visual and kinetic learners. I can adapt to what the student requires, so I will try slightly different teaching strategies depending on what kind of learner they are.
I have a history of mentoring throughout school, from students in year 7 to people my own age. This has given me an understanding of what is required from different levels of students in and out of school. I will assist with homework between sessions and go through it in more detail during sessions, if necessary. I am willing to learn specifications and subject areas to help students in as much depth as I possibly can.

In the initial meeting, I will make notes of every concern a student has about a subject area. I will then make a ‘plan of action’ for the following sessions with the student, to tackle each concern in as much depth as necessary.
These concerns may include struggling to write essays in keeping with the times in an exam. If there is only half an hour available for one question in their exam, the session we do may have the learning objective: To be able to write a P.E.E.L paragraph in 10 minutes. I will prepare for this by creating a question in line with what may come up in an exam, and writing an answer myself.
To start the session, the student and I will verbally discuss the question and how you could answer it. This will enable me to understand if it is the level of knowledge which is the issue, or the ability to put it down on paper. The student will then have 10 minutes to write their answer. I will go through it with them and mark it as though I was an examiner. I will get them to do the same to my answer.
I will measure progress throughout each session by asking them to do a P.E.E.L paragraph as a plenary until we are both satisfied that they are at the level they should be. If they complete this, then I will encourage them by having the next session’s plenary being a game or a short quiz that I will prepare to do with their subject.
This will be adapted and changed depending on the student and their academic level.
