About Hanlie
Hello and Welcome, my name is Hanlie van der Westhuizen! I’m excited to have you here and to share my passion for crochet with you. Crochet has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I learned the craft from the women in my family – my granny, mom, and aunt – and since 2004, I’ve continued to refine my skills through self-teaching and practice. Over the years, I’ve gained extensive experience not only in following and reading patterns but also in creating my own designs. I can even take a photo sample of a project and recreate it with my own pattern! One of my biggest loves is making amigurumi (crochet toys), where I can really bring creativity and imagination to life. My goal is to help you build confidence with your crochet skills, whether you’re learning the basics or ready to take on more challenging projects. I pride myself on being patient, approachable, and committed to helping you enjoy every step of the learning process. By the end of our lessons, I want you to feel inspired, capable, and proud of what you’ve created – because crochet is not just a craft, it’s a joy!

I offer 2-hour crochet sessions that teach you the basics, from how to hold a crochet hook to the essential stitches learned. The beginners' session includes a kit valued at R75, which contains the appropriate yarn and correctly sized hook for easy learning, along with stitch markers and a yarn needle. If you want to learn how to crochet in rows, this class is perfect for you! By the end of the session, you'll be able to create items such as coasters, scarves, and dishcloths. My classes are hands-on and emphasise individual attention, keeping class sizes small with only 2-3 learners per session, so feel free to bring a friend along! I will guide you through each step in detail and with patience, allowing you to focus solely on the basics during the first lesson. This way, you won’t feel overwhelmed as you begin your first project. Remember, practice makes perfect! You will need to practice your tension with each stitch at home. In the second class, you'll have the chance to crochet your first project, which could be a coaster, mug cozy, headband, or scarf—the choice is yours! My lessons are designed for total beginners, starting with crochet in rows and progressing to intermediate techniques, such as crochet in the round. After completing the intermediate class, you will have the skills necessary to create a baby toy, commonly known as amigurumi. After each lesson, I will provide you with a detailed instruction sheet outlining what you have learned, making it easy for you to practice on your own. I also include the abbreviations used to make pattern reading easy. Various kits and patterns for amigurumi are available, which include everything you need to create your project of choice at home or during your next lesson if you choose to do so.
