About Brian
I've been a professional trombonist in NYC for the last 13 years. My first NYC gig was with Michael Dease's Big Band as an 18 year old at The Garage in 2011, which no longer exists. Since then, I've worked for Frank Lacy for the last five years across three different bands, worked with the last iteration of the Josh Evans Big Band right up until the pandemic, and have been a sideman on four recordings that feature Gary Bartz, Frank Lacy, Ray Anderson, James Brandon Lewis, and more. Worked for, in no particular order: Fabio Morgera, Ron Carter, Mark Johnson, Allen Lowe, Captain Black Big Band, Kendrick Oliver & The New Life Jazz Orchestra, The Makanda Project, Asaf Yuria and more. Played with, in various settings: Zaccai Curtis, Luques Curtis, Sharel Cassity, Kush Abadey, Davis Whitfield, Matthew Shipp, Dr. Lewis Porter, Brandon Lewis, Theo Hill, Bobby Zankel, Russell Malone, Donald Vega, Freddie Hendrix, Stacy Dillard, Jonathan Barber and more. Learned quite a lot from all that, looking forward to paying it forward.

A student-teacher relationship is a two way street. When the teacher invests in the student, that empowers the student to invest in themselves with the teacher's guidance. Rather than lecture or dictate, our lessons are conversations where I help guide the student in the right direction. In return, the student processes the information and shows growth.
Based on your stated goals, I will design listening and playing assignments that I think are valuable. Using the skills that I've gained over the years, we will build better habits in the areas of technique, tone, music theory, ear training, stylistic accuracy, repertoire building (basically whatever you're working on already + some things I might give you), transcription, trombone maintenance, improvisational concept, and physical mechanics (posture, movement, etc.)
Although I've reached the highest levels of the craft, I was never really a prodigy. I made a lot of mistakes when I was younger! I understand the value of not being misled or shamed by a teacher, having had plenty of experiences along those lines. I'm grateful to be in a position where I can help students develop their best personal process for practice, deconstruct their habits, and use new concepts to reach their artistic and musical goals.
