About Paul
I have taught Japanese, English, and Korean at universities in Japan (Hokkaido University, Kyushu Sangyo University), Hong Kong (Lingnan University), and the United States (Seton Hall University). I have also worked as a personal Japanese and English language tutor. I have a Ph.D. in anthropology, with a focus on intercultural communication and applied language studies. I continue to conduct research on language acquisition (how adults learn foreign languages and intercultural skills) and issues in applied linguistics (endangered languages and language documentation).
Interestingly, my teaching experience has involved working with students of drastically different skill levels ranging from absolute beginner to advanced (sometimes in the same classroom!). I am aware of the challenges that students face learning and using Japanese, and having struggled with these issues myself, I believe I am in a unique position to help.
I have also self-studied Japanese and Korean to advanced levels, and I have also taught myself conversational Spanish and Mandarin. Whether students want to learn Japanese on their own or are using tutoring to supplement their formal lessons, I believe my lessons can help students meet their communicative goals.
Finally, I am a strong advocate of COMMUNICATIVE APPROACHES to language learning. These approaches put practical communication at the center of language education. They also ensure that students do not let grammatical difficulties stop them from communicating effectively. Communicative approaches aim to build both confidence and competence in a short amount of time. My lessons and teaching philosophy are grounded in these approaches.

Hi! I am a language educator, and I have taught Japanese, English, and Korean at the university level for over 10 years. I have lived and conducted research in Japan for 7 years, where I have worked at three universities.
I have a Ph.D. with a focus on applied language studies, intercultural communication, and linguistic anthropology. I specialize in teaching beginners and intermediate level students obtain fluency and build confidence speaking the language.
My tutoring uses a communicative and practical approach that aims to build both confidence and competence. I know firsthand that learning Japanese can feel overwhelming, especially at the beginning and intermediate stages. Thus, I focus on helping students develop their abilities by tailoring lessons to their specific needs.
Every lesson I teach is catered to students' needs and goals. My lessons can be very structured and involve fundamental grammar lessons with chances to practice this grammar, or they can be conversational based helping students to develop their spoken fluency, with grammar and vocabulary review coming at the end. Each student has a unique set of goals and abilities, and my teaching approach reflects this.
What sets me apart as a tutor is my own experience learning to speak fluent Japanese and Korean, as well as my experience teaching these languages in formal classrooms. I know the difficulties that Japanese learners face when struggling to use Japanese grammar and make suitable sentences. I know the challenges students face when working through textbooks and grammar books, dealing with complex explanations and example sentences. I have struggled with these myself, and I have seen my students struggle with them as well. I am thus in a unique position as a teacher and learner to relate to students' experiences and goals and help them achieve them.
Additionally, I have also researched HOW people learn languages. I am happy to help students “learn how to learn” another language, especially on their own. I strongly believe that students learn best through self-directed study, and I am happy to also guide students as they study independently.
My lessons would be best for students who are at a beginner or intermediate Japanese level. I believe they would be most useful for students who are interested in developing conversational skills through a communicative approach. I can also be of most help to students who need help approaching Japanese study (such as how to study alone, what materials to use, how to use them, how much time to study, etc.) and students who are interested in developing intercultural communication skills.
