About Phillip

Having performed internationally for over twenty years, I know the commitment required of us, from auditioning to performing title roles. I am very grateful for the experience I have gained from collaborating with some of the world’s finest musicians, and I hope I can share some of this knowledge with you.

As a founder and co-artistic director of the Stratford Summer Music Vocal Academy, I led emerging artists through an intensive performance-oriented curriculum for seven seasons, to prepare them for a career in classical vocal music. Over the years, I have also taught masterclasses at several colleges and universities. One thing I have learned from these experiences is that every voice has a story to tell and a place in the continuum of music. I look forward to the opportunity to help each student find their most sincere and excellent selves.

About the lesson

Whether you are just beginning your studies, or are already working as a classical singer, I will help you unlock the potential of your voice. I am interested in finding your best sound to bring your ideas to life. Together we will establish goals and make a plan for you to achieve them. We will explore how technique, diction and interpretive skills can be applied to deliver your message.

In a typical lesson there will be some technical exercises to get you warmed up, but also to isolate and address challenges as they come up, and to open new possibilities in your vocal production.

As we examine the pieces that interest and suit you, we will investigate all their layers of meaning, not only from their text, but from their musical underpinnings and historical context. The more complete your ideas on a given work, the more directly you can convey your thoughts to your audience.
