I would start by introducing the topic to my learners, explain and find out what they already know about the topic. I would also suggest a teaching approach which is suitable for the topic.
As to make sure that my learners understand the topic, I would give them an activity to solve so that I can reflect if they understand the topic. After every completion of the topic I would give them formal assessment to see if they understand the topic.
