  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I started working with students as a writing consultant at my university's writing center. I really enjoyed the pedagogical theory that grounded our discussions and training, but it was the practice in the years that followed that ignited a passion for education. Each client — with their own interests and specific assignment requirements — brought their own particularities to the session, which made me a better consultant and a more interdisciplinary learner.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach two subjects on SuperProf: the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) and writing consulting. The former is a difficult, process-driven, and skills-based test that requires a clear understanding of multiple concepts across many contexts; I really enjoy helping students parse the LSAT's complexity and get them to the moment when it all "clicks". As much as I enjoy tutoring for standardized tests, I especially enjoy working with consultees throughout the writing process, as each student is different and requires my ongoing curiosity and openness to their ideas and goals.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My high school English teacher, Ms. Vaoga, empowered my classmates and me to use literature and the books discussed in class to better understand our own daily lives. I understood, through her gentle cajoling, to think more deeply about the power of a good teacher.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

My pedagogy is based on three principles: quality over quantity, flexibility to student needs, and the prioritization of the students' (rather than the tutors') agency. Together, I think they build a foundation for an impassioned student to succeed.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I took the LSAT twice in 2020, scoring 171 each time due to internet issues. Completely burned out (and set to move to Argentina regardless), I decided I needed a break from the LSAT and would come back later when I felt stronger. I'm glad that I trusted my intuition, as my third LSAT was the most successful (177) but also the most enjoyable. I learned the importance of listening to your body and mind.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

I've found that current students tend to do better than those who have already graduated from school, I think in part because the LSAT's focus on reading skills favors people who are already reading significantly for standard coursework. It's important, thus, to develop personalized schedules and resources for each student.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I'm interested in history and politics, which grounds my interest in travel, languages, and art!
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P)?

After over six years in the profession, I'm still improving as both a learner and teacher.
