About Imogen
- What kind of experience do you have?
I am an experienced and well-qualified teacher, working in the York and Leeds areas. As well as teaching privately, I currently teach violin and recorder in primary and secondary schools. I teach all ages, from young children to adults and elderly. My aim is to suit the lessons to each individual, and to ensure that each pupil gets the most out of and enjoys their experience. I always prioritise making sure that my students enjoy their lessons and the instrument they are learning. As well as teaching individuals of all ages, I am also happy to teach in small groups, for instance, siblings or friends learning together.
I believe strongly that music is something that can be enjoyed by everyone. My teaching is focused on learning but also enjoyment and I feel that this principle is important for success. I incorporate Kodaly and Suzuki pedagogies into my teaching, for example, by including singing games and rhythms with younger pupils, and music theory and memory with older students, to develop well-rounded musicians.
I work in a flexible way, offering tuition that is adapted and suited to each student, treating everyone as an individual and responding to their needs.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am a member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians and the Musicians Union.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
My pupils are all offered the opportunities to perform in twice yearly pupil concerts, which are held in York.
Testimonials from pupils include:
Madeline
A few months ago and about 45 years after my first and only attempt to teach myself to play the recorder, I decided it was time I learned something musical while I still just about could - and time I had a teacher too. I have never had any kind of music education, so it was with great trepidation that I took my old recorder out of its box and embarked on lessons with Imogen. And I am so glad I did. Progress is slow at my age, but progress there is and I am really enjoying learning something new and actually playing music! Although she is obviously a talented musician, Imogen is patient and encouraging and doesn't make me feel an idiot or under pressure. I wish I'd done this years ago and I'm so glad I've conquered my fears to do it now.
