About Gillian

I am a retired Professor of Philosophy, and I love to teach! Philosophy focuses on perfectly clear and precise writing and thinking, and of course those are needed in many kinds of work other than philosophy. I love to help students strengthen their writing at every level, from grade school through to graduate dissertations and professional writing. I have extensive expertise across many disciplines, and can help students writing in a wide range of subject areas. As a prof I always had outstanding student evaluations - I greatly value interacting with students and getting to understand their ideas and goals, in a way that seems to work very well from the students' point of view. I have taught at excellent universities in both the US and Canada for 20 years. Students I have mentored have gone on to top-ranked graduate programs, law schools, and many other lines of work that require outstanding skills in thinking and writing. Many of my students keep in touch years after they have graduated. Private teaching is a new departure for me, and I am excited to bring my skills and experience to a broader range of students outside the classroom walls. I'm also very happy to work with students who are still learning English as a foreign language - I can help you fine-tune your English diction quickly, and to the highest standard.

About the lesson

I prefer to work closely, one-on-one, with each student. If you have a text you are working on (a class assignment, an important letter, a thesis or dissertation, a book manuscript...) we can work on that - you can send me material and I can discuss with you how to improve what you have written. If you are just trying to learn better English writing with no particular product in mind, we can work together to come up with fun and effective writing projects to help move you forward. I am a warm and down-to-earth person with ninja-level mastery of the English language and clear thinking - I think you will find that working with me is enjoyable and pays off impressively in its effects on your writing and thinking.
