About Jennifer
Hi! My name is Jenn and I graduated with honors in the Fine Arts; emphasis on Art History and Studio Art. I’ve been oil painting landscapes for almost 25 years, and reading/studying art history for about 30. As a child, my Aunt lived in France and would send me famous replicas of paintings and history books from the different museums she visited. Thus, began my love and passion for seeing, studying, and creating art! -Art is not a mirror held up to reality, but a hammer with which to shape it. -Bertolt Brecht

For painting, we will go over the basics of paint types and where to begin a painting; materials, priming, sketching, under-painting, glazing, and sealing. Need help in art history too? We can study poignant works, from the beginning of recorded history through the 1960s, the different eras, the styles, the artists, and the years everything listed was active. Together we will go over the significance of art in culture, and the philosophy of why people create.

In-person tutoring for students over the age of 17 will take place in a quiet cafe, library setting, or outside (En Plein Air.) I will not go to private homes, dorms, or use my own home for students over the age of 17. For students under the age of 17, a parent or guardian must remain present at all times. You must have your own paints and supplies. Oil paints are expensive, but the techniques we use don’t require many colors (I recommend Winsor & Newton paints.) Oil paints and solvents are toxic and not suitable for children under 12; non-toxic oil pastels should be used in place of oil paints. Water-soluble oil paints are suitable for students age 13-17 that don’t want to use real oil paints. Anyone using oil paints should be aware not to touch paint or solvent to their skin; always wear a protective apron and paint in a well ventilated area with odorless solvent and clean rags laid flat (not balled up.)
